Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement on the passing of Dr. Emily England Clyburn, wife of House Majority Whip, Congressman James E. Clyburn (D-SC):
“I was heartbroken to learn of Dr. Emily Clyburn’s passing. Emily was a lifelong civil rights activist, a champion of educational and economic opportunity, and an accomplished librarian, who was passionate about spreading the power of knowledge and learning. South Carolina and our nation have lost a truly extraordinary individual.
“I offer my deepest condolences to the Clyburn family as they mourn the loss of Emily. May Jim, his children Mignon, Jennifer, and Angela, and their four grandchildren, along with the entire Clyburn family, know that Emily’s legacy and loving memory will always live on. Emily leaves behind the inspiring and powerful legacy of a beloved mother, wife, and public servant, who we all will remember with reverence and respect. She will be dearly missed.”
