Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement on the passing of former Florida Senate President Gwen Margolis:
“Words cannot express how deeply sorry I was to hear of Gwen’s passing. Gwen’s reputation for honesty, kindness and generosity made her the loving mother, great friend, and highly respected public official that she was. She was an excellent role model for everyone in our community, and was especially inspiring to those considering public service.
“Gwen compiled an exemplary record of public service as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner, including in her role as the first female chair of that body. She also served multiple terms in the Florida legislature, including serving as the first female President of the Senate. It is not surprising that Gwen was beloved by people throughout Broward County and South Florida. Her selfless dedication and leadership will always be remembered. I offer my deepest condolences to Gwen’s family and friends, and join our entire community in mourning her loss during this time of great sadness. May her spirit and legacy live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
