Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement on the passing of Congressman John Lewis (D-GA):
“Words cannot express how heartbroken I am to learn of the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Congressman John Lewis. John had an unlimited reservoir of love. He taught us all to respect the dignity of all human life. He was indeed the conscience of the United States Congress. I am so blessed to have known him as a friend.
“Known for getting into 'good trouble,' John was a civil rights icon, a staunch supporter of nonviolence, a fierce opponent of injustice, and the longest serving member of the Congressional Black Caucus. He was one of a kind and cannot be replaced. Our Caucus, the Congress, the city of Atlanta, and our nation, were inspired every single day by his dedication and wisdom, and will simply not be the same without him. Congressman Lewis was a legend whose legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come, strengthening our resolve in the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
“I offer my deepest condolences to the Lewis family, his friends, and staff during this time of great sadness and loss. John will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
