Congressman Alcee L. (D-FL) made the following statement on the agreement reached between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to fully normalize diplomatic relations:
“Yesterday’s announcement that the State of Israel and the UAE will establish full diplomatic relations is welcome news and a historic step forward. I congratulate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan and their governments for working diligently over the past year in pursuit of this agreement and look forward to seeing it formalized in the weeks to come. Israel’s right to exist cannot be denied, and I hope this agreement paves the way for others to normalize their ties with Israel and make peace.
“This agreement underscores the importance and viability of a Concurrent Track approach to the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process, as well as the role of the United States as an honest mediator. The House of Representatives should immediately take up my resolution, H.Res.138, which expresses support for the concurrent track framework for peace, commends Arab and Muslim-majority states that have taken steps to improve bilateral relations with Israel, and calls on Palestinian leaders to return to the negotiating table with Israel in pursuit of a two-state solution.”
