I am proud to recognize Lucas Metropulos, a senior at St. Andrew's School in Boca Raton, as a Hastings' Star Student. When he was just a sophomore, Lucas founded Fishing for Families in Need (FFN), an organization that provides the catches of local fishermen to be distributed at a local soup kitchen -- providing a vital source of protein to families in need. This alone makes a remarkable difference, but Lucas went even further in his dedication to serving his community. Under his leadership, FFN has also offered an afterschool fishing clinic throughout the school year where local youth are taught how to fish. Indeed, Lucas has taken the responsibility to literally 'teach a man to fish' and this service to the community has brought nutrition to those in need and has provided young people with fishing skills, allowing them to provide for their families and communities in the future.

Over the past two years, Lucas has refined his organization and received well-deserved national attention for his efforts. He has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Points of Light Foundation and, in keeping with his charitable nature, donated his winnings to the Florence Fuller Child Development Center and the Boca Helping Hands Soup Kitchen, the two organizations he partners with for the FFN program. Lucas was also awarded the Pathfinder scholarship on April 26, 2011 by the Palm Beach Newspapers Inc. for his service. His dedication to the Palm Beach community deserves to be honored and recognized. He is a true inspiration to us all. I am honored to also recognize Lucas for his accomplishments and wish him the best of luck as he starts this new chapter of his life.

Please find below the letter that I sent to Mr. Metropulos congratulating him on his outstanding achievements.
